In France, the Hague Convention governing matrimonial regimes dated 14 March 1978 has entered into force on 1 September 1992. 

The Hague Convention will apply when the spouses have not designated the applicable law to their matrimonial regime.

However, following the Regulation (EU) 2016/1103 dated 24 June 2016 implementing enhanced cooperation in the field of jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and execution of decisions relating to matrimonial regimes, spouses who marry after this date will no longer be governed by the Hague Convention of 14 March 1978.

The principles of this Regulation regarding matrimonial regimes remain quite similar to those of the 1978 Hague Convention.

However, there are two differences:

Consequently, if you have married after 24 June 2016, there will not be any possible automatic mutability of your marital regime.
